Professor Ma graduated from Xi 'an Medical University with a bachelor's degree in medicine in 1982 and from Medical School of Queen's University Belfast with a doctor's degree in surgery in 1996. He is currently a second-grade professor of surgery and a first-grade chief physician in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, and a doctoral tutor in surgery and oncology. He was approved to enjoy special allowance of the State Council. He was awarded the 5^th Excellent Teachers of Xi 'an Jiaotong University. He is the Deputy Director of Hepatobiliary Research Institute of Xi 'an Jiaotong University.

Professor Ma has published over 200 articles including more than 130 published in SCI-indexed journals. He was awarded 3 second prizes of Science and Technology Award of Shaanxi Province.

Professor Ma received the honorary titles of Outstanding Returned Overseas Students of Shaanxi Province, the 6^th Advanced Individuals in Teaching and Educating of Xi 'an Jiaotong University, Excellent Teachers and Excellent Doctors of Xi 'an Jiaotong University Health Science Center.
