Recently, Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education announced the list of strategic research projects in 2022. The project "National Strategic Research Project for Magnetic Surgery Development", led by Professor Lyu Yi from Xi 'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and jointly hosted by Academician Chen Xiaoping from Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and other prestigious teams nationwide was approved as a major project.

Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education is a high-level advisory body to guide the scientific and technological work of colleges and universities, which is also a China’s think tank. The strategic research projects of Science and Technology Commission aim at supporting colleges and universities to meet the needs of scientific and technological progress and social development, grasping the frontier science and technology, and carrying out in-depth and systematic innovative strategic research. Taking advantage of these projects, Science and Technology Commission can play the role as a national think tank.
Magnetic surgery-related research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of refractory and critical diseases in clinical settings, which can simplify the surgical procedures, lower the surgical difficulty and resolve the bottleneck issues of digestive tract and vessel reconstruction in surgical field. Meantime, systematic research and development of magnetic medical devices and equipment surrounding innovative magnetic surgery technology can enhance China’s original innovation and international competitiveness in the research and development of high-end medical devices and medical functional materials. How to achieve the standardization of magnetic surgery technologies encounters huge challenges. Strengtheningprospective, exploratory and revolutionary research on magnetic surgery technology and striving to seize the strategic highland of international magnetic surgery have become the core tasks of current development of magnetic surgery in China. By constructing the evaluation framework and index system for the development of magnetic surgery and comparatively analyzing the development of international magnetic surgery, this project systematically illustrates the development law and characteristics of magnetic surgery in China, and further proposes key scientific problems, development goals and ideas of magnetic surgery in the future. The research results will improve relevant research theories and systems of magnetic surgery from different dimensions and subsequently lead the development of magnetic surgery around the globe.
