Organ transplantation in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has developed rapidly, and the surgical techniques and efficacy of liver and kidney transplantation have reached the internationally-advanced levels. On September 3, 2020, our hospital officially completed the 1,000th case of liver transplantation, reaching a record high.

Liver transplantation in our hospital was initiated in the early 21st century. Professor Pan Cheng’en, as a pioneer and founder of liver surgery in our hospital, successfully implemented the first case of liver transplantation in Northwest China along with Professor Lyu Yi and Professor Liu Chang on November 15, 2000. After 20-year arduous work and continual innovation, Professor Lyu Yi as the disciplinary leader led the team to remain true to the original aspiration and forge ahead, and innovate the exploration in the combination of medicine and engineering in liver transplantation. The team is the first to successfully carry out magnet-assisted recanalization in China to treat biliary anastomotic stenosis after liver transplantation, and significantly shorten the "anhepatic phase" during liver transplantation from conventional 30-40 minutes to 9 minutes and 50 seconds, setting a new world record. This year, the team led by Professor Lyu Yi successfully conducted the experiment of rapid liver implantation by using colloidal magnet combined with vascular stent, which is expected to further shorten the existing shortest anhepatic phase of 9 minutes and 50 seconds to 5 minutes, providing a stronger guarantee for the rapid recovery of liver transplantation recipients.
Currently, Liver Transplantation Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of XJTU has become one of the most influential liver transplantation centers in China, the most influential liver transplantation discipline which integrates medicine, teaching and research in Northwest China, the first batch of National Training Bases for Organ Transplantation Physicians, and a National Key Clinical Discipline. The Center has undertaken Key and Surface Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Special Project of Scientific Instruments, Key Construction Project of Clinical Disciplines of National Health Commission, and Major Science and Technology Project in Shaanxi Province. It has published more than 400 academic articles, including over 50 articles published in SCI-indexed journals, organized 10 academic conferences and CME at home and abroad, and obtained more than 20 invention patents and achieved remarkable scientific research results. The project entitled "Theoretical innovation and technological breakthrough in improving surgical efficacy of liver cancer by inflammatory damage control" received the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2016.
On September 29, our hospital held a press briefing marking the 1,000th case of liver transplantation in conjunction with a gathering for liver transplantation recipients. Lyu Yi, Assistant-to-President of XJTU, President Shi Bingyin of our hospital, Vice President Liu Chang, Zou Yuliang, Assistant-to-President of our hospital, Professor Pan Cheng’en, founder of liver transplantation in our hospital, Professor Xue Wujun, President-designate of Chinese Society of Organ Transplantation of Chinese Medical Association and Director of Organ Transplantation Institute of XJTU, Professor Zhao Yingren, Director of Department of Infectious Diseases, and leaders of Department of Medical Affairs and Nursing Department attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Wu Zheng, Director of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery.
Wang Bo, Deputy Director of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, delivered a brief report on 1,000 cases of liver transplantation in XJTU.

Yan Hong, Vice President of XJTU, sent a video clip congratulating the First Affiliated Hospital of XJTU completing 1,000 cases of liver transplantation.President Shi Bingyin introduced the development history of liver transplantation and kidney transplantation which was initiated earlier than liver transplantation, and the achievements of the construction of scientific research platform in our hospital.
Professor Xue Wujun illustrated that the progress from the 1st case of liver transplantation 20 years ago to the 1,000th case today signifies that the liver transplantation team has formed a certain scale and reached a certain height, which is expected to lead the development in the future. He highlighted that the transplantation discipline of the First Affiliated Hospital of XJTU should become bigger and stronger, step on the global stage and lead the development direction of organ transplantation across the world.
Professor Pan Cheng’en proposed that the development of liver transplantation is not only the improvement of technology, but also the crystallization of multi-disciplinary and multi-department collaboration within the whole hospital.
Later honorary certificates were presented to the pediatric recipients. After the press briefing, the hospital organized experts from Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Department of Endocrinology, Department of Nephrology and Department of Nutrition to deliver health science lectures to liver transplantation recipients.
