From November 22 to 24, the 17^th National Academic Conference of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association in conjunction with the1^stCCI Cup Tuoren Medical Device Science and Technology Innovation Competitionwas held in Suzhou. Professor Cai Kui, Deputy Director of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association, presided over the competition. Ma Feng from National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Precision Surgery and Regenerative Medicine (Surgical Dreamworks) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) grabbed the first prize with the project entitledHand in dreams: a system for single-port flexible laparoscopic surgery.

Launched in January 2011, Medical Device Science and Technology Innovation Award is widely recognized as a national science and technology award approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Science and Technology Award Office. Influential experts in various fields are invited to serve as judges to guide the project promotion, evaluation and transformation cooperation and promote the connection and cooperation between medical inventors and enterprises.

Medical hospitals and institutions from 25 provinces attended this competition. Li Bin, Director of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association, Qian Ying, Director-designate of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association, Zhang Qiang, former Director of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association, Cai Kui, Feng Jingyi, Zhang Jin and Wang Xin, Deputy Directors of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association, Liu Jingxin, Liu Shenglin and Liu Gang, Standing Committee Members of Chinese Society of Medical Engineering of Chinese Medical Association and Zhang Guo, Vice President of Tuoren Group, served as judges of this competition.

Since its inception, the project of Hand in dreams: a system for single-port flexible laparoscopic surgery has received professional guidance from Professor Lyu Yi, Professor Yu Liang, Professor Wu Zheng, Professor Wang Bo, Research Fellow Zhang Xufeng, Associate Professor Zhang Xiaogang, Attending doctor Li Yu and tremendous support from Xi’an Cetro Medical Devices Co., Ltd. Besides, it has also been approved as New Medical Technology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and Key Industry Innovation Chain (cluster) Project of Key Research and Development Plan of Shaanxi Province. This project properly integrates the advantages and complements the limitations of both laparoscope and endoscope to resolve clinical problems. The first 10-mm single-port flexible laparoscope and equipped system is independently designed, which resolves the bottleneck issues of ultra-minimally invasive operation of single-port laparoscopic technology and will significantly promote the clinical application of single-port laparoscopic technology. This award is another achievement of our hospital in the field of minimally invasive and innovative medical combined with engineering technology.
