Recently, the East Division of the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) successfully performed multiple high-complexity robotic procedures in urology. Under the leadership of Professor Wu Dapeng, Executive President of the East Division, the minimally invasive technology team leveraged precise, intelligent robot-assisted laparoscopic techniques to complete more than 10 complex operations in succession, such as nephron-sparing surgery for a renal hilar tumor. This milestone marks the East Division’s entry into a new phase of precision- and intelligence-driven minimally invasive surgery, significantly enhancing its regional medical influence and its capacity for the diagnosis and treatment of challenging cases.

A 35-year-old patient with a renal tumor was considered unlikely to undergo kidney-sparing surgery by multiple hospitals due to the tumor’s atypical location, large size, and close proximity to critical vessels. After comprehensive evaluation, Professor Wu Dapeng’s team made a decisive decision to perform a robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. During the procedure, supported by the robotic system’s high-definition three-dimensional visualization, Professor Wu precisely controlled the robotic arms to completely excise the tumor within a confined operative field while preserving the kidney, achieving favorable outcomes with minimal blood loss and a short operative time.

Robot-assisted laparoscopic technology integrates the strengths of minimally invasive surgery and robotic systems, offering core advantages such as precise and stable maneuverability, stereoscopic and high-clarity visualization, flexible surgeon control, and reduced trauma with faster recovery for patients.

Leveraging the strong foundation in medical-engineering integration at the FAH of XJTU, the East Division has, since introducing this technology, successfully performed a series of high-complexity procedures for more than 10 patients within two weeks. These operations include robot-assisted partial nephrectomy for renal hilar tumors, radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer with preservation of sexual function, and resection of retroperitoneal tumors, among other complex cases.

As a key component of the multi-division strategy of the FAH of XJTU, the East Division remains committed to extending high-quality medical resources to areas north of the Wei River. Led by President Wu Dapeng, the minimally invasive technology team aligns its efforts with the FAH’s overall blueprint for building a National Medical Center, staying grounded in regional needs while striving with determination to continuously advance technological innovation and disciplinary development. Looking ahead, the team will continue to expand the application of robotic surgery, empowering more departments to reach new heights in minimally invasive surgery. By delivering leading-edge domestic technical solutions to a broad patient population, the East Division will contribute robust support to the development of the National Medical Center.
