Recently, Professor Yang Jian’s team from Department of Medical Imaging of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University published a paper “Temporary hearing threshold shift in healthy volunteers with hearing protection caused by acoustic noise exposure during 3-T multisequence MR neuroimaging” in top journal Radiology (IF=7.296) under RSNA. This research is anoriginal research on MRI noise safety closely concerned by the clinics and public, and it has attracted wide attentions from scholars in related fields at home and abroad.

Outstanding Professor Richard Salvi from listening function and damage field of State University of New York especially made a long text of comments on clinical significance of this research as well as reference value for guiding the revision of related specifications and guidelines, and his commentswere also taken asspecial comments published in the same issue of Radiology.

According to Professor Salvi and Dr. Sheppard, this research clarified the clinical and public understanding on MRI noise risk and safety prevention to a certain degree, strengthened the importance of daily clinical prevention, and provided a valuable reference for guiding the revision of occupational safety guidelines. This research was recommended to be included in the related specification formulation standard by Occupational Safety and Health Administration of USA. (The results reported by Jin et al. can be put into regulatory context by considering the maximum permissible exposure limit [PEL] allowed by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA])

Dr. Jin Chao is the first author of this paper, and Professor Yang Jian is the corresponding author. The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University is the unique undersigned unit of this paper.

This research has been supported by National Key R&D Program, National Natural Science Foundation (general program), and New-century Excellent Talent Program of Ministry of Education.
