On February 25, 2023, the 3rd International Classic Surgical Video Contest of Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction Surgery (NOSES) kicked off in Shenzhen. Yang Kui, a young physician and doctoral student from Department of General Surgery in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), clinched the champion in the individual finals. Led by Professor Sun Xuejun, Shaanxi branch team consisting of Yang Kui and other members grabbed the honorary title of Gold Medal Team.


Academician Hao Jie served as Honorary Chairman, and Professor Wang Xishan served as Chairman of this contest. Individual and team contests were set up. In the team contest, each branch of China NOSES Alliance participated as an affiliation, and directors of each branch organized and selected three different types of NOSES surgical teams from three medical centers in this region to participate in the team contest. In total, 51 contestants from 17 branches nationwide participated in the 3-day fierce competition. Shaanxi branch team grabbed the first place in the team contest, and Yang Kui received the highest score in the team contest. The contestants for individual finals were selected from 8 national regions. Finally, 14 domestic contestants and 5 international contestants were shortlisted for the finals. Yang Kui clinched the champion in the individual contest.

In recent years, NOSES surgery has been widely applied in gastrointestinal surgery, especially colorectal surgery. NOSES surgery is free from auxiliary abdominal wall incision, and all procedures can be performed under endoscope or through natural orifice, which is regarded as "the minimally invasive procedure of minimally invasive surgery". In recent years, Department of General Surgery has been devoted to promoting disciplinary exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad, participated in and carried out a series of multi-center clinical trials, and held 14 sessions of Chang'an Gastrointestinal Surgery Conference, which strengthened the introduction and application of advanced technologies worldwide and promoted the development of minimally invasive techniques in gastrointestinal surgery. As the chairman affiliation of Shaanxi Branch of China NOSES Alliance, Professor Sun Xuejun participated in the compilation of Expert Consensus on Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction Surgery for Colorectal Tumors (2019 Edition) and 100 Questions for Natural Orifice SpecimenExtraction Surgery for Colorectal Tumors and other monographs, and organized the Northwest region contest of International Classic Surgical Video Contest of NOSES, playing a leading role as a National Medical Center in this region.
